Caterpillars
Loren and Kaylyn each received a caterpillar at school to bring home and attempt to grow it into a butterfly. Loren named hers Crawly and Kaylynn named hers Elizabeth! We (especially me) became obsessed with the caterpillars! After about a week it formed it's chrysalis (cocoon) at which point we removed it from its vial and put it into a shoe box cut out with saran wrap around it and we waited...and waited...and waited! Then finally Thursday (4/29) Loren's emerged as a butterfly!!!! She was SOO excited (as was I)!!! Then yesterday Kaylynn's emerged!! We had two beautiful painted lady butterflies!! Loren decided to rename hers Flappy now that it was a butterfly, Kaylynn decided to keep hers Elizabeth. We fed them their sugar water and gave each a little orange slice. The girls enjoyed watching their butterflies flap their wings and try to fly in their boxes. But today it was time to release them into the environment. It was neat to watch the butterflies fly out of their boxes and fly away! We were kind of sad to let them go, but know they will be happy being free!!
Here are Crawly and Elizabeth on their first night home.
